MOSCOW, April 21. /TASS/. This year’s Russian Super Cup, an annual much-anticipated football clash between the two top national clubs, may be held abroad for the first time since it was first contested for over a decade ago, Sergey Pryadkin, the president of the Russian Football Premier League (RFPL), said on Tuesday.
"We have two variants [for Super Cup’s venues] with one of them either in Russia on July 12 or abroad on December 18 or 19. We are considering two or three foreign countries. We had an offer from Kazakhstan, for instance," Pryadkin, who is attending SportAccord Convention in Sochi, said.
Russia’s one-match football competition, the Super Cup, is held annually between the RFPL champions and the holders of the Russian Cup. In cases the RFPL champion championship and the Russian Cup winners are the same club then the other participant in the contest is the runner-up to the RFPL champion.
SportAccord was founded in Lausanne, Switzerland, on April 21, 1967 and operates as an umbrella organization for all international sports federations, as well as organizers of multi-sports games and sports-related international associations. Before the SportAccord Convention kicked off in Sochi on April 19, the international organization enlisted 92 full members and 17 associate members.
The popularity of football in Russia recently reached its high tide as the country gears up to host the FIFA World Cup in 2018.
