Ancient Churches of Armenia

2014/11/18

Armenia was the first country to officially christianise, it happened in the IV century and could be still traced through the ancient architecture preserved until our days. Practically every smallest Armenian village or town has its own church that could often be dated the IV-VIII centuries.

By the way, it’s hard to confuse an Armenian church with any other’s, even with a Georgian one not to mention Russian or Byzantine churches. Its most distinctive feature is a cone-shaped dome.

We have here an abandoned Soviet place for kids. Like a lot of the Soviet large factories had those compounds around the big cities or if the company was really big and “rich” – right at the Southern coast of the Black Sea. They were sending there kids of the workers during the vacations for free to have fun and rest. A free summer camp and stuff. However now a lot of those lie abandoned. Especially the ones that not in the coast. The ones on the coast were quickly acquired into private ownerships and now are the premium hotels etc. So let’s take a look what photographer Deletant has took from there.

What he particularly liked of this place were the old sculptures of Russian writers and Lenin scattered all over the place.0_924b7_87a1de7e_orig 0_924b6_8cc2661d_orig

And now let’s see some other approach to the Soviet reality. Vladimir, a photographer was enjoying making photos of life around him in the city of Moscow in 1970s. Industrial Splendour: Fifth Power Unit of the Chernobyl NPP

2014/11/11

This must be the most ambiguous places of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. On the one hand it’s a breathtaking industrial beauty, on the other one it’s a symbol of the time that stopped forever. Finally it’s another evidence of the biggest industrial disaster, portrayal of disappointed hopes and wreckage of brilliant ideas. All these aspects are reflected by this unfinished fifth power unit of the Chernobyl power plant.

This power unit had been planned to be put into service in November 1986. However due to the accident of April 26, 1986 it was not doomed to happen… The fifth power unit remained unfinished to stand forever surrounded by construction cranes…

They also planned to build the sixth power unit but had time only to break the new ground for it.

View of a construction crane from one of the roofs of the 5th power unit.

Great industrial images can be taken here.

Famous dark red panels of the building make the 5th power unit the most recognizable objects of the exclusion zone.
