MOSCOW, May 19 (RIA Novosti) – Russian President Vladimir Putin met with the country’s Security Council on Monday to discuss the situation in Ukraine, where tensions continue to mount in intensity, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
“During the discussion of international topics, attention was given to the situation in Ukraine, where over the last few days of the continuing punitive operation using the country’s regular army, a further growth in intensity has been noted,” Peskov said.
The sides also discussed a number of international issues on the agenda of upcoming talks in China, Peskov said, as Putin prepared to embark on an official visit to Shanghai this week. While in China, the Russian president is scheduled to attend a summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia.
The meeting was attended by the speakers of both houses of the Russian parliament, Valentina Matviyenko of the Federation Council and Sergei Naryshkin of the State Duma as well as Secretary of the Russian Security Council Nikolai Patrushev, his deputy Rashid Nurgaliyev, Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, Director of the Russian Federal Security Service Alexander Bortnikov, Director of the Foreign Intelligence Service Mikhail Fradkov and permanent member of the Russian Security Council Boris Gryzlov.
