SIMFEROPOL, May 28 (RIA Novosti) – Crimea plans to create a working group to organize aid for refugees pouring from Ukraine into Russia’s newest region, according to a decree by Crimean State Council Chairman Vladimir Konstantinov.
Konstantinov said he has been inundated with requests from Ukrainian asylum seekers to provide accommodation for them on the Black Sea peninsula.
“I have tasked the State Council with drafting a law to organize a working group to solve these issues,” Konstantinov told the Crimean parliament Wednesday.
Crimea’s authorities said Tuesday they were ready to provide Ukrainian refugees in the region with humanitarian and financial aid. Acting Head of Crimea Sergei Aksyonov said over 100 Ukrainian refugees are currently in the republic.
Crimean First Deputy Prime Minister Rustam Temirgaliyev earlier said over 1,000 refugees had arrived in Crimea from Odessa following the May 2 tragedy at the Trade Unions House. Many of them returned home when the situation normalized in the region.
Ukraine’s interim authorities have launched a special operation to crack down on federalists in southeastern regions, which have been protesting against the legitimacy of the new authorities since March.
The operation led to violent clashes and dozens of casualties in Slaviansk, Kramatorsk and Mariupol. Some 48 people were killed and over 200 injured in Odessa, with local lawmakers saying a total of 116 could have died in tragedy.
