Fire In the Village: No Chances to Save the House

2014/02/23

How does a house usually burn down in a village? If not extinguished in the very first moments it can hardly be saved. And people do not call a fire department cause still hope to manage with the situation by their own forces. But the house is burning down too fast. And when they realize their impotence they start dial 01 with their trembling burnt fingers,,,

This fire department is a half military object. What do you think firemen do when they have no emergency calls? Sleeping? Nope. They can sleep at night only. In daytime they should make most of any spare minute.

Loudspeaker asks them to gather in a classroom for theoretical lessons. Besides, they spend several hours a day for physical training. Drivers polish windows of their vehicles and suddenly hear about a fire emergency! The same loudspeaker names the address and nature of the fire and another life begins for the firemen. Less than after 40 seconds only two fully equipped fire trucks leave the department. Just think about it: 40 seconds to finish their clases, gather in the garage, put their suits on, get into the trucks, start them, remove shoes from under the wheels, open the gates and finally leave the territory of the fire department…

Here on site they immediately start to extinguish the fire. The house should be preliminarily disconnected from the electric grid. After multiple training sessions they perform all actions automatically.

One of the main tasks in to prevent fire spreading to the neighbouring houses. But this time they got information that there were gas cylinders in the burning house so the major tasks were to prevent them from explosion and to contain the fire in the single house.

But everything becomes too comlicated soon. An old ZIL truck can bring 2500 liters of water only, while the fire hose nozzle consumes over 3,5 liters per second and the water they have brought is obviously not enough. And nobody thinks of any firewater ponds until a fire occurs…

In this particular case the closest hydrant is located two kilometers away from the burning house. It’s not the worst distance for a village, you know. While the trucks are going for water, the firemen have nothing to do but watching the fire flames.

The trucks made several trips for water and twenty minutes after the fire was almost extinguished.
