This Peter and Paul Cathedral was built in 1712-1733 under the project of Domenico Trezzini at the place of a wooden church that had been standing there in 1703-1704. The belfry of the Cathedral is crowned with a spire and has a total height of 122 meters which made this building to be the highest one in the city until 2012.
From the very beginning the Cathedral was the place of burial for the royal family of Romanovs. But in 1896 there was built a burial vault nearby for the princes of Romanovs. Eight royal graves were brought there from Peter and Paul Cathedral.
The royal burial vault was seriously damaged in the Soviet years and is still closed for reconstruction.
This white corridor connects the burial vault with the Cathedral.
