MOSCOW, August 12 (RIA Novosti) – A prison guard in central Russia is suspected of beating an inmate to death by pummeling him with his fists as well as a book, investigators said Monday.
The guard allegedly administered the beating after demanding that the inmate hand over unspecified "prohibited" items in his cell, Bryansk Region investigators said in a statement. The inmate reportedly died of head injuries a week after the June incident.
The guard, identified by local media as Andrei Yakubo, 31, has been charged with “abuse of authority resulting in grave consequences,” according to the investigators' statement. He faces up to a decade in prison.
Regional news websites said the victim was first-time convict Vladimir Bukov, 26, but did not name his offense. Such reports also did not reveal the book's title.
