TASHKENT, April 10. /TASS/. The international terrorist organization Islamic State has been trying to recruit supporters in the North Caucasus, the first deputy director of Russia’s federal security agency FSB, Sergey Smirnov, said after a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization’s Council of Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure in Tashkent on Friday.
"One of the risks of the Islamic State is it is beginning to infiltrate other terrorist organizations. They have taken special interest in the terrorist organization Imarat Kavkaz," Smirnov said.
He added that "some Imarat Kavkaz field commanders have already vowed allegiance to the Islamic State."
"This is a very dangerous trend," he warned, adding that in this way the IS was trying to expand the zone of its interests and influence.
"We should devise joint specific measures of resistance to this," he said about cooperation with SCO RATS partners.
As an example of effective cooperation he mentioned joint efforts by Russian and Uzbek law enforcers to upset the activity of the Hizb ut-Tahrir organization.
"This work has proceeded systematically for several years. A joint group has been created. It operates in the on-line mode," Smirnov said about the opportunities for operative interaction by SCO special services.
"According to FSB data, about 1,700 people from Russia may be involved in the Islamic State activities," he added.
